Becoming a Man

BecomingaMan

A Modern Rite of Passage for Young Men and the Adults Who Guide Them
Becoming a Man book cover
WHY THIS BOOK EXISTS

Boys are told what not to become while receiving conflicting messages about what it means to be a man.

Culture critiques toxic masculinity endlessly, yet offers young men almost nothing to replace what it tears down. No framework. No mentorship. No path forward.

Without a clear framework, many young men grow up searching for identity, purpose, and belonging in all the wrong places. Some suppress their emotions. Others mistake performance for worth or dominance for strength. Many simply drift, hoping maturity will arrive with age.

How do we solve this problem?

Boys need mentorship, support, and adults who embody the values they hope to pass on. Grounded men are shaped through intentional practice, meaningful relationships, and the courage to keep growing.

Becoming a Man offers a practical, principle-based path forward. Through guided practices, journaling prompts, and honest reflection, it helps boys develop emotional integration, self-awareness, grounded strength, and the capacity to lead with kindness rather than dominance.

Unlike traditional workbooks designed for solo completion, Becoming a Man is intentionally designed to be experienced in relationship. It is a workbook meant to be led by a trusted adult, mentor, coach, parent, or fellow journeyer who walks alongside the participant—not as someone with all the answers, but as a participant as well.

THE FIVE PRINCIPLES

The five principles are the foundation of this work because they represent qualities that influence every area of life—from how we relate to ourselves and others, to how we lead, love, work, and serve.

No single principle stands alone. Each one strengthens and supports the others.

Presence

I am fully here.

Purpose

I am driven by meaning.

Proactivity

I take initiative.

Provision

I provide value.

Clarity

I express who I truly am.

This is more than a workbook. It's a shared process that strengthens relationships while shaping character.
For parents & mentors

You do not have to have all the answers.

This book gives you a shared language, practical tools, and meaningful moments to walk alongside the young man in your life.

Helping raise a generation of grounded, emotionally healthy men.

I didn’t write Becoming a Man because I believe boys need to be fixed. I wrote it because I believe boys deserve to be supported and mentored.

For more than twenty years, I’ve spent my professional life helping physicians make life-changing medical decisions. Alongside that career, I’ve immersed myself in the study of human flourishing, emotional intelligence, trauma, secure attachment, embodiment, and what truly allows people to thrive.

But the greatest education of my life has been raising my two sons.

Like every parent, I’ve wrestled with questions that don’t come with a manual.

  • How do I help my boys become strong without becoming hardened?
  • How do I teach confidence without entitlement?
  • How do I raise men who know how to lead, love, protect, communicate, and remain deeply connected to themselves?

Questions like these became an obsession.

Over the years, I read hundreds of books, attended countless trainings, earned a Master’s Degree in Happiness Studies, became a trauma-informed coach, and explored disciplines ranging from psychology and neuroscience to mindfulness, somatic practices, and emotional development.

What I discovered was surprising.

Very few resources cater to young men in their transition to manhood or teach self-awareness and self-discovery, without performace. I saw a need for a rite of passage – a way for adults to guide and support our boys to cultivate and practice the skills and qualities to become a grounded, solid man.

That’s why I created Becoming a Man.

This workbook isn’t about perfection. It isn’t about outdated ideas of masculinity. And it certainly isn’t about telling boys who they should be.

It’s about giving them practical tools to feel grounded, emotionally intelligent, courageous, responsible, and deeply authentic.

My hope is that every boy who works through these pages discovers that manhood isn’t something you stumble into with age. It’s something you practice.

And my hope for every parent, mentor, teacher, coach, grandfather, or trusted adult is that this workbook creates conversations that might otherwise never happen.

Because I believe boys become great men through consistent guidance, meaningful challenge, honest reflection, and adults who choose to walk beside them.

If this workbook helps even one young man become a little more present, a little more courageous, and a little more aligned with who he truly is, then every hour spent creating it will have been worth it.

Thank you for being part of that journey.
